![]() ![]() I first read Black Like Me late in 1961 as a freshman in college in Chapel Hill NC. I was born and raised in the very racially segregated rural US South, and I am white. Finally, it brings back memories of the KKK burning a cross in our yard 30 feet from our house in June of 1955 just before my 12th birthday to warn us to stop associating with our closest neighbors and friends who happened to be black. And memories of losing my signed copy from the original run of this beautiful book years later during a move. ![]() It brings back memories of this wonderful book.and memories of meeting and talking with John Howard Griffin. ![]() The actual romance-complete with HEA-is between worn-down Millennial Violet and Roarke, a buttoned-up minotaur who is unexpectedly drawn to his human clinician. Somehow it's filthy and clinical at the same time and I still don't know how to define all of those scenes. For most of the minotaurs, it's very transactional but most humans consider it to be sex work. If you're wondering how one milks a bull, think on it for a second. Violet takes a job as a collection tech at a facility that "milks" minotaurs for a pharmaceutical they sell to humans. ![]() NacostaĬan a monster-f*cker book be sweet? The answer is apparently "yes." Here are my thoughts on a few high-heat books I've read recently. And then I danced around my barren field of f*cks and wrote this post. I've read a pretty random assortment of books recently that made me wonder "how much does my mother really need to know about my reading preferences?" Eventually, I decided that 1) my family's pretty open about things and 2) people don't have to read my blog if they don't want to know things. ![]() ![]() ![]() Stella would totally do that if she could figure out how to input gigabytes of data into her brain, but she’d rather die than admit it. “I bet you just lie there and run linear recursions in your head while a man does his business.
